Genesis 1:1-5
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was waste and void; and darkness was on the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw the light, that it was good. God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. There was evening and there was morning, one day.”
This is the opening of the Hebrew Bible, setting the stage for the entire narrative. It describes God as the sole initiator and creator of all that exists, bringing order out of chaos through speech.
What does it mean for our understanding of the world to believe that its very beginning was an act of deliberate, spoken creation?
